T he 2005 race season got off to a rough start for Carey.  After only one race in the books, he suffered a back injury with two torn discs.  This took him out of training and work for the next month, but he knew that would not stop him from riding.  He started a slow recovery by walking everyday with his (then pregnant) wife, which allowed his back to become strong enough to be able to Progress into slow road rides.  He started with 30 minute rides, working his way up to longer times and distances, slow and steady.

To get back into the racing, Carey changed over to the Mountain biking single speed circuit, short races of about one hour compared to the two hour cross-country races.  This provided to be very beneficial for him to get back into racing, slowly building a stronger back.

Throughout the summer, Carey focused on the short, intense races to get his back into shape for the cross-country races later in the season.  Ithaca was the first cross-country race where he came across with a win and later in the day he also won the single-speed race for a great sweep of the elite class.

For the rest of the season, he set his goals on winning the point series for the entire Michigan mountain bike Promoters:

Tailwind, MMBA and Fun Promotions.  After some consistent riding with several wins and podium visits, he had achieved those lofty goals.

The 2005 season has been challenging for Carey in many ways, with his attention being divided between the back injury, racing and a new daughter, born in August.  He would like to thank the team sponsors for all they have provided; his excellent results couldn't have been accomplished without their support.
